Macular Degeneration

Advanced Care for Macular Degeneration in the Hudson Valley

Age-related macular degeneration, often called AMD, is one of the most common causes of central vision loss in adults. It affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision used for reading, driving, recognizing faces, and seeing fine detail. AMD can develop slowly, and many patients do not notice symptoms in the early stages, which is why regular dilated eye exams are so important.

At Precision Eye and Laser, our experienced eye doctors provide comprehensive evaluation, monitoring, and treatment for macular degeneration in Fishkill, Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, and the greater Hudson Valley. We are now pleased to offer Valeda® Light Delivery System treatment, an FDA-authorized, non-invasive light therapy for patients with dry age-related macular degeneration. Valeda is the only therapy proved to pause progression and improve vision for mild to moderate AMD.

If you have been told you have dry AMD, drusen, or early signs of macular degeneration, now is the time to schedule an evaluation.

Symptoms of Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration may not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages. As it progresses, symptoms may include:

Blurry or hazy central vision
Straight lines appearing wavy or distorted
Trouble reading small print
Difficulty seeing faces clearly
Needing brighter light to read
Trouble seeing in dim lighting
Faded or less vivid colors
A dark, blurry, or empty spot in the center of vision

Important: If straight lines suddenly look wavy or distorted, or if you notice sudden central vision changes, call your eye doctor promptly. This can be a warning sign of advanced AMD or wet AMD.

Introducing Valeda® Treatment for Dry Macular Degeneration

Precision Eye and Laser now offers the Valeda® Light Delivery System, a non-invasive and only approved therapy treatment for dry age-related macular degeneration.

Valeda uses a technology called photobiomodulation, or PBM. During treatment, carefully selected wavelengths of light are delivered to the eye to stimulate cellular activity in the retina. The goal is to support retinal cell function and help improve visual outcomes in appropriate patients with dry AMD.

Valeda received FDA marketing authorization for the treatment of patients with dry age-related macular degeneration and is described as the first FDA-authorized treatment option for vision loss in dry AMD.

Why Valeda Is Important for Dry AMD Patients

For years, many patients with dry macular degeneration were told that there was little to do beyond monitoring, vitamins when appropriate, healthy lifestyle changes, and watching for progression to wet AMD.

Macular Degeneration

Valeda represents a meaningful advancement because it is:

Non-invasive
Designed for dry AMD
Performed in the office
No injections
No surgery
No needles
Generally quick and comfortable
Personalized lens selection based on lifestyle and visual goals
Generally quick and comfortable

In the LIGHTSITE III clinical trial, Valeda treatment met its primary endpoint and showed improvement in best-corrected visual acuity compared with placebo treatment. The study evaluated multiwavelength photobiomodulation in patients with nonexudative, or dry, AMD.

Who May Be a Candidate for Valeda?

Valeda may be an option for certain patients with dry age-related macular degeneration, especially those with early to intermediate disease who still have useful central vision.

You may be a candidate if you have been told you have:

Dry macular degeneration
Drusen
Early AMD
Intermediate AMD
Macular changes related to aging
Vision changes from dry AMD

You may not be a candidate if your vision changes are from another condition, such as diabetic retinopathy, active wet AMD, advanced scarring, or another retinal disease. A full dilated eye exam and retinal imaging are necessary to determine whether Valeda is right for you.
